African Academic Public Health Informatics Alliance

A workshop on developing and sustaining academic programs in public health informatics was held in Nairobi, Kenya, December 7-9, 2009. The workshop was hosted by the Center for Public Health Informatics, University of Washington and the University of Nairobi and sponsored by the Rockefeller Foundation. Participants at the workshop included individuals from ten Sub-Saharan African Countries as well as individuals from the US, Great Britain and Peru as well as representatives from the Health Metrics Network, World Health Organization and Microsoft Research. The group determined there is a need for sharing curricula, educational materials as well as approaches to funding the development of curricula and Centers of Excellence in Public Health Informatics. A Steering Committee was identified and the group was tentatively named the African Academic Public Health Informatics Alliance. Further information regarding the development of the Alliance will be posted on the GPPHI website as it becomes available.
